You may hear about sedation dentistry in advertisements, from friends, or perhaps we have brought it to your attention. While you likely have a general understanding of what sedation is all about, you may be like many of our patients who share common questions about this dental option. We invite you to look over the following FAQs to learn more about sedation and how it may improve your dental experience:
Question #1: What type of sedation do you offer?
We offer oral conscious sedation. This means you will take a tranquilizing pill carefully chosen for your needs. You may take it when you arrive or just before your treatment.
Question #2: How will the sedation affect me?
You will feel extremely tranquil and relaxed. However, you will not fall asleep. You will be able to respond to us verbally and will be aware of your surroundings. You may not remember parts – or any – of your experience once the sedative wears off.
Question #3: I’m not afraid of the dentist – is sedation still for me?
Sedation is certainly a wonderful method of combatting fear or anxiety regarding dental visits. However, these are not the only reasons to choose sedation. Some patients experience a severe gag reflex, which sedation may help relax. Others simply feel uncomfortable in the dental environment, experiencing extra sensitivity to the sights and sounds of the environment. By speaking with our team, we can determine whether sedation is well suited to your needs.
Question #4: What if I’m afraid of needles?
Oral conscious sedation is a wonderful option for individuals who dislike needles. You will simply need to swallow a pill – no injections necessary.
Question #5: Will I be able to drive myself home after my visit?
No. You will need to find a friend or loved one to drive you home after your visit to give the sedative time to wear off.
