Are You A Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

We know that it is sometimes difficult to overcome dental fears whether they stem from a past traumatic experience or from the noises in the dental office or from the dread of getting a tooth numbed.

We also understand the importance of not delaying treatment which could lead to pain and bigger dental problems. With the use of sedation, we can help patients get treatment despite their fear and anxiety.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide has been used in dentistry for many decades and is considered one of the safest forms of dental sedation for both adults and children.

The benefits of Nitrous Oxide include:

  • The ability to eat and drink the night before the appointment unlike other forms of sedation.
  • The gas is flushed out of the body in about five minutes.
  • Patients can drive to and from the appointment.
  • The gag reflex is relaxed making it easier to take X Rays and to get treatment that might normally cause gagging.
  • It is easily administered. A mask of the appropriate size is placed over the nose, and the gas is slowly inhaled while the mouth is closed.
  • It is customizable. If, for example, you only need it to get through the anesthesia, we can turn it off after you are numb.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves using a sedative pill given an hour before the dental visit to induce relaxation. Although more at ease, the patient remains awake and responsive during the visit. It differs from Nitrous Oxide in that the sedative agent stays in the body longer, making it necessary for an escort to drive the patient home.

The patient cannot eat after midnight prior to the visit. It is only appropriate for those in good health who do not use other sedatives or sleep aids and who have clear, unobstructed airways. It is more useful in patients who need longer treatment visits and more extensive dental work.
